We've been playing around with various floor plans for the cabin. Some ideas are our own. Some we've found in books or on websites. It's so fun to imagine hanging out/living there. I'm so glad that we both have the ability to envision. We are aiming for something simple and "cabiny" that we can afford now. We also need to plan for the possibility and dream that we may live in this place after we retire, at least for parts of the year.
Most of the designing is pretty straight forward. It should be basically a square structure with enough bedrooms for our whole family and/or friends. We want a large kitchen and gathering space. Sandy is very adamant about having a big stone fireplace (at least someday, so it has to be planned now). And we want the focus to be the lake, as seen from inside, or the front porch. Thus lots of great windows are essential! Shouldn't be too hard to design, right? Sure, but there are some critical structural details that are hard to spell out...We decided to check into hiring an architect.
After a visit with one architect, we were discouraged by the cost. Thankfully, we landed on a referral from our truss company. This guy does floor plans on the side and can do it for 1/3 the cost of the other architect. And although this project is going to be all about saving money and trying to do it excellently for less, no building project can even begin if you don't have the confidence that the stairs lead you to the second floor and not out the side wall! A great set of blue prints is "foundational"! (Pun intended!)
We should get the final prints soon. Woo Hoo!
